This record group consists of the daily field activity reports of Michigan Geological Survey Division personnel for 1976. Includes reports on the daily drilling activities of Division personnel on various field sites. Oil exploration was encouraged at this time due to a rapid increase in gasoline prices. These reports detail the success or failure of selected oil wells on a daily basis. Sites were located in Cadillac, Grayling, Imlay City, Lansing, and Mount Pleasant.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
